Entrevista com Football, etc.

Bem, uma das maiores satisfações de ter começado esse blog, foi poder entrevistar muitas das minhas bandas favoritas. Football, etc. é uma delas. Com um pop refinado, que lembra bastante as bandas lideradas por mulheres no rock alternativo dos anos 90, o trio- apenas Lindsay(guitarrista/vocalista) e Mercy (baixista) são membros constantes- vem fazendo bonito.

Então, fiquei muito contente quando ambas aceitaram responder algumas perguntas via email, você pode ler logo abaixo:

1.  Olá! Como estão as integrantes do Football, etc.?

Mercy: I estou na conferência da Associação para Historiadores Americanos em Washington DC. Está nevando e demasiadamente frio para mim.

Lindsay: Apreciando o feriado de inverno e me preparando para a turnê que está por vir!

2. Há muitas listas de fim de ano. Quais foram seus álbuns favoritos de 2013?

Mercy- Red Hare – Nites of Midnite, This Town Needs Guns – 13.0.0.0.0. e o novo da Beyonce.

3. Audible completou quarto meses de lançamento. Como foi a reação geral ao álbum e foi o que vocês esperavam?

Mercy: Eu acho que muitas pessoas curtiram o quão mais limpo e maior Audible soou (comparado ao The Draft), o que ansiávamos. Eu fiquei feliz por Audible ter tocado na rádio universitária também.

4. Vocês vão fazer turnê na Europa. Eu li os comentários no seu facebook e vocês pedem para seus fãs falarem como produtores, etc. Como é fazer tudo sozinhas? Vocês apreciam isso? Irrita às vezes?

Lindsay: Nosso amigo Tommy em Londres está agendando a maior parte de nossa turnê na Europa. É uma operação totalmente “faça você mesmo”. Nós preferimos fazer nós mesmas por algumas razões- nós interagimos diretamente com os produtores, temos mais escolhas do que queremos fazer, e é mais barato.

5. Como é a cena musical em Houston? E como é o público indie/emo em Houston?

Lindsay: Eu tenho estado feliz sobre como a cena tem mudado nos últimos anos. Mudamos-nos para cá em 2008, e tivemos um tempo difícil tentando encontrar um lugar na cena, mas há algumas bandas realmente boas aparecendo recentemente que são ligados na influência indie/emo. Eu estou ansiosa por ver essa parte da cena crescendo em Houston.

6. Há muita conversa envolvendo o tão chamado “emo revival”. Mas, se estou certo, vocês lançaram um EP em 2009, quase cinco anos! É um termo que chateia vocês ou vocês não veem algum problema?

Mercy: Eu não tenho problema com o termo, se está ajudando as pessoas a acharem música que gostam. Eu acho que é meio bobo e um termo enganoso às vezes. Mas todo esse fascínio em torno do “emo revival” está trazendo atenção para algumas bandas “faça você mesmo” que trabalham arduamente, e isso é certamente uma coisa boa.

7. Recentemente eu entrevistei o Dowsing e eles disseram apenas ótimas coisas sobre a CYLS. Vocês concordam com alguns paralelos que as pessoas fazem entre a CYLS e a Deep Elm de 90?

Lindsay: Eu acho que selos como a CYLS poderiam certamente ser comparados com alguns dos primeiros selos indie/emo. O que eu acho legal é como uma gravadora pode ajudar a criar e propagar uma cena e uma ética. Fãs musicais tornam-se leais a certos selos como a CYLS, Topshelf e Tiny Engines como a Vagrant, Polyvinyl e Deep Elm fizeram previamente.

8. Warren Franklin fez um cover muito bom de sua canção. Quais canções significam muito para vocês a ponto de fazer um cover?

Lindsay: Eu realmente amo música alternativa dos anos 90 (liderada por mulheres). Eu gostaria de fazer covers de bandas como The Breeders, That Dog, ou Liz Phair.

9. Poucos álbuns tiveram tanto efeito em mim com ambos Low Level Owl. Como foi trabalhar com o grande Ed Rose?

Lindsay: Foi um prazer trabalhar com Ed. Foi uma honra trabalhar com alguém que gravou discos como “Low Level Owl”, que é um dos meus discos favoritos de todos os tempos. Nós fomos capazes de gravar como quiséssemos, com alguém com tanta experiência ao nosso lado fazendo tudo funcionar. Eu estou tão triste que ele vendeu seu estúdio e vai fazer outras coisas- eu amaria trabalhar com ele novamente!

10. Essa constante mudança de baterista tem sido um problema ou tudo bem por vocês?

Mercy: Nós tivemos dificuldade em encontrar alguém que possa nos acompanhar em turnê e gravar. Por enquanto, nós vamos continuar sem um baterista permanente, que mora em Houston. Ao invés disso, vamos ter amigos preenchendo quando puderem. Nós tivemos ótimos momentos tocando com Andy do Annabel, e estamos ansiosas para tocar com Daniel do Papermoons/Pswingset, na próxima turnê. Daniel, provavelmente, também vai tocar nas novas canções que serão gravadas.

Interview with Football, etc.

Hey smart people. 2013 was a great musical year and had so many good releases. But Audible, last Football, etc. release, really stood out in my opinion. So, I was absolutely honored when Lindsay (guitar/vocal) and Mercy (bass) accepted doing an interview.

1. Hello. How is everything with Football, etc band members?

Mercy: I am at the Association for American Historians conference in Washington DC. It's snowing and way too cold for me.

Lindsay: Enjoying the winter holiday and gearing up for our upcoming tour!

2. There are a lot of lists at the end of the year. What albums surely will be at yours?

Mercy: Red Hare – Nites of Midnite, This Town Needs Guns – 13.0.0.0.0., and the new Beyonce record.

3. It has been four months since Audible was released. How was the general reaction to the album and it was what you expected?

Mercy: I think a lot of people enjoyed how much cleaner and bigger Audible sounded (compared to The Draft), which is what I was hoping for. I was happy that Audible charted on college radio too.

4.  You will be touring Europe next year. I read the comments at your facebook and when needed, you ask for your fans to talk to promoters, etc… How is to do pretty much everything by yourself? Do you enjoy it? It pisses down sometimes?

Lindsay: Our friend Tommy in London is doing most of the booking for our European tour. It is a very DIY operation. We prefer to do things ourselves for several reasons-- we get to interact directly with fans and promoters, we get more choice in what we want to do, and its cheaper. 

5.  How is the music scene at Houston? And how is the indie/emo audience at Houston?

Lindsay: I've been happy with how the scene has been changing over the past couple of years. We moved here in 2008, and have had a bit of a hard time finding a spot in the scene, but there have been some really cool bands springing up recently that are definitely plugged into the indie/emo influence. I look forward to seeing that part of the scene grow in Houston.

6. There’s a lot of talk evolving the so called emo revival. But, if I can remember right, you did an EP at 2009, almost five years! Is this a term that upset you or you don’t see a big problem?

Mercy: I’ve got no problem with the term, if its helping people find music they like. I do think it’s a little goofy and sometimes misleading term. But the buzz around “emo revival” is bringing attention to some hard working DIY bands, and that is certainly a good thing.

7. I recently interviewed Dowsing and they said only great things about CYLS. Do you agree with some parallels people draw between CYLS and 90’s Deep Elm?

Lindsay: I think labels like CYLS could certainly be compared to some of the early indie/emo labels. What I think is cool is how a label can help create and propel a scene and an ethic. Music fans become loyal to certain labels that are doing great things, and I see that in labels like CYLS, Topshelf and Tiny Engines today like Vagrant, Polyvinyl and Deep Elm did previously.

8. Warren Franklin did a very good cover of your song. What songs means so much to you that you’d like to cover?

Lindsay: I really love 90's alternative (female fronted) music. I'd love to cover bands like The Breeders, That Dog, or Liz Phair. 

9. Few records got me like both Low Level Owl. How was working with the great Ed Rose?

Lindsay: Ed was a delight to work with. It was an honor to work with someone who has recorded records like "Low Level Owl," which is one of my favorite records of all time. We were able to record the record how we wanted to, with someone with so much experience in our corner making it all work. I'm so sad he sold the studio and is moving on to other things-- I would love to work with him again!

10. This constant changing of drummer has been a problem or that’s fine by you?

Mercy: We have had a hard time finding someone who can keep up with touring and recording. At least for now, we are going to move forward without a permanent, Houston-based drummer. Instead we’ll have friends fill in when they can. We had a great time playing with Andy from Annabel, and are looking forward to playing with Daniel from Papermoons/Pswingset on this upcoming tour. Daniel will also probably be playing on the new songs will be recording.

Football, etc.- Audible [2013]

“Sem humor, a vida é duma atroz obviedade.” — Zuca Sardan

O mundo não é justo, e alguns discos nos lembram disso entusiasticamente. As pessoas vivem em torno de objetivos tão concretos e eu me sinto um fracasso completo em tudo. O disco me lembra disso também. Quando a doce voz de Lindsay inicia falando “this cant be right”, eu compartilho da mesma sensação dela. Os vencedores nunca desistem, então resta aos fracassados constatarem suas inúmeras falhas. E eu que sempre prometi não falar dessas coisas novamente.

Eu preciso de um tempo longe disso tudo, o mundo tão barulhento e não soa nada de substancioso. Um tempo ouvindo Audible, isolado das pessoas. Para lembrar que estou em um vácuo e há outros nesse vácuo. Que dessa zona onde tudo é infértil, pode surgir algum compartilhamento e daí existir admirando o mistério das coisas. Talvez tudo mude e eu não passe a ser tão sozinho.

Outra madrugada e retorno sozinho. Pensando em todas as minhas escolhas que fizeram ficar nessa condição. Nada disso pode estar certo, não é assim que as coisas deveriam ser. E estou aqui, de novo, reclamando de tudo, fingindo que tudo que faço tem alguma importância e alguém liga. Então é melhor colocar o som, tentar ficar em paz com minhas memórias. Prometer se esforçar para ser uma pessoa melhor. Tentar, apesar de frequentemente falhar. Porque só o tempo é perdido, o resto fica a deriva e nos esquecemos como lembranças mais caras da primeira infância. Tentar sair dessa escuridão.
